The Leader in Heavy Oil Industrial Research

In the summer of 2005, the town of Lloydminster provided an additional 15,500 sq. ft of land for KUDU Industries’ new service centre and manufacturing plant. The company’s expansion brought it even closer to the nexus of the Western Canadian heavy oil industry. It was an exciting point in the company’s history in light of the fact that Lloydminster was the heavy oil capital of Canada and many of the industry’s major players had significant resources invested in operations recovering heavy oil in the region. It was a bold step for the company.

KUDU specializes in progressive cavity pumps (PCPs) and, like much of the heavy oil service and supply industry, continues to experience substantial growth. It is the nature of the sector that when producers expand, so do suppliers. KUDU’s Lloydminster expansion coincided with further expansion to its Calgary based manufacturing facility. The company has also recently opened facilities in Bonnyville and Wabasca and moved into larger shops in Sedgewick and Provost to increase its manufacturing capacity and persistently provide the best service to companies involved in the processing and recovery of heavy oil.

The equipment produced by KUDU is not simply a commodity, but an application of technology unique to the heavy oil industry. The process of producing a well is a science where we are constantly learning and evolving. In 1977, KUDU President Robert Mills started exploring the possibility of using PCP systems to extract heavy oils. With his son Ray, Robert founded the company 12 years later to distribute PCPs and drive heads for use in the Western Sedimentary Basin. Today the company manufactures and distributes an array of oil and gas production equipment used for recovering heavy oil, processing coal bed methane, and many other tasks.

KUDU prides itself on a record of extensively researched and tested, high quality products and professional services. Our continuing efforts have led to the installation of a 200 m test well at our Lloydminster shop. Like the existing test well in Calgary, which tests new products and functions as a training instrument, this new test well is identical to a field well, except for the high pressure, noxious gases and other dangerous elements present in heavy oils fields. These wells are useful to customers and employees alike in learning installation and maintenance procedures used in recovering heavy oil. These test wells have been used extensively by our research and development department; resulting in our reception of an Innovation Insights Award from The National Research Council in recognition of our manufacturing processes. KUDU continues to serve the heavy oils industry with pride and distinction.
